POWERING THE QUEST FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: THE RESHORING OF
SEMICONDUCTORS & FEEDGING MODELS WITH ALL OUR DATA
Dr. Dean Samara-Rubio, Senior Product Line Manager, Intel Corporation
Two intertwined trends in the computing industry are placing new stresses on grid operators and energy providers even as we strive to re-imagine a grid that can support high levels of renewable and distributed energy resources. Training and using Foundational Models for AI is energy-intensive, but in this time of rapid change and buildout, estimates of the energy needs for the business operations that will be built upon these models vary widely. These models are of strategic importance and demand a large percentage of the most advanced semiconductors and adds urgency to the ramp of semiconductor manufacturing in North America. Both the buildout of AI datacenters and semiconductor factories are concentrated in locations with the sustainable and low-cost power and water which impacts the local people and environments.
