Diminishing Reliability of Coal Generation Santiago Meza, Plant Engineer - Spruce Power Plant, CPS Energy
With changing environmental and energy policies, coal-fired generation reliability has endured impacts due to infrastructure availability, maintenance availability windows, fuel assurance and availability, operational changes, and increasing retirement of coal-fired generation. With the continued accelerated rate of fossil fired generation retirements, reliability for the remaining coal-fired plants in the United States requires a deeper look at key reliability impact drivers to maintain continued production through the next decade. The ongoing retirement of existing coal-fired plants will also necessitate flexibility and streamlined regulatory/permitting processes to ensure generation losses from retirement do not impact energy resource availability for the nation’s growing energy demand.
