Renewable, carbon-free power generation continues its inexorable journey in transforming and reshaping the fundamental operational dynamics of the today's utility grid. However, the inherent volatility of renewable power, namely, when the wind doesn't blow and the sun isn't shining, necessitates a responsive, flexible and complimentary energy storage and generation solutions that can cost effectively complement rapid, intermittent load swings in a reliable secure manner. Hydrogen (H2),when oxidizes as a fuel in a gas turbine, generates no CO2 emissions. This presentation will focus on the technical challenges with using hydrogen as a fuel for gas turbines. Because hydrogen burns differently than natural gas, traditional OEM gas turbine combustion systems are challenged to handle meaningful variable mixtures of these fuels, which should be an important design consideration.
