The Emerging Energy Storage Technology Portfolio Dr. Justin Raade, Principal Project Manager, Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI)
New energy storage technologies are rapidly emerging to provide services critical for reliable, low-carbon electricity grids. Lithium ion batteries are becoming increasingly established for meeting daily peak loads, and hydrogen is also gaining traction for ultra-long duration energy storage. But which technologies may be suitable for the gap between lithium ion and hydrogen? This presentation will highlight several use cases for energy storage, including mitigating the “duck curve,” providing reliable capacity for multi-day weather events, and addressing seasonal supply and demand mismatch. Selected technologies will be discussed that could be suitable for these use cases, including examples from mechanical, thermal, and thermochemical storage classes.
