Distribution Design & Engineering 101 Workshop
Distribution Design & Engineering 101 Workshop

Gain a practical understanding of electric distribution engineering and design through real-world insights and applications
November 4-5, 2025 | Austin, TX

This 1.5-day, foundational workshop is designed for electric utility engineers and designers seeking to strengthen their understanding and practical application of modern distribution design principles. Through real-world examples, interactive discussions, and comparative utility practices, participants will gain valuable insight into how design and engineering choices impact system reliability, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

Day 1: Core Design Fundamentals

Day 2: Advanced Design Applications and Standards

Participants will leave with a broader understanding of foundational engineering concepts and actionable design insights that support safer, more reliable, and cost-effective distribution system planning.

Who Should Attend

Distribution engineers, designers, planners, and utility professionals responsible for overhead and underground system design, standards development, and project planning.

Continuing Education Certificates

Upon completion of the workshop, attendees will receive a continuing education certificate worth 12.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) in their online Alltricity Network profile. PDHs may be applied toward recertification credit. Typically, 1.0 PDH is equal to .1 CEU, but that conversion scale should always be confirmed with the certifying body attendees are affiliated with.

DAY 1 - TUESDAY, November 4, 2025

Core Design Fundamentals

The first day focuses on the building blocks of effective distribution design—from conductor sizing and NESC clearances to pole loading and guying. Attendees will explore how to apply industry standards within distribution construction manuals (Austin Energy's Design Criteria Manual), perform pole load and ruling span calculations, and evaluate the benefits of steel poles. Sessions also address service drop and lateral design, secondary voltage drop, and fuse coordination principles critical to reliability and safety. The day concludes with a review of primary metering design in both network and distribution areas.

Key Topics:

  • Conductor Sizing
  • NESC Clearances and Application within DCM (the Austin Energy Design Criteria Manual)
  • Pole Load Calculations and Steel Pole Advantages
  • Ruling Span and Guying Design
  • Service Drop and Lateral Design
  • Fuse Coordination and Protective Devices
  • Primary Metering for Network and Distribution Systems

DAY 2 - Wednesday, November 5, 2025

Advanced Design Applications and Standards

Day two builds on foundational topics with an emphasis on advanced design practices and standards used across the industry. Participants will examine transformer sizing for various customer classes, switchgear applications, and distribution vault requirements. Comparative utility insights will inform discussions on establishing a new vault standard for Austin Energy. Sessions will also cover voltage regulation, real-estate considerations—including rights-of-way, easements, and encroachments—and a review of Austin Energy’s Electric Service Planning Application (ESPA) process.

Key Topics:

  • Transformer Sizing (Residential, Commercial, Industrial)
  • Switchgear Applications
  • Vault Requirements and Comparative Utility Practices
  • Voltage Regulators and Capacitors
  • Rights-of-Way, Easements, and Subsurface Utility Engineering
  • Austin Energy ESPA Review
