Who Should Attend

Engineers, supervisors, managers, and others in decision-making roles—regardless of financial background—are encouraged to attend and gain an integrated framework for utility financial decision-making.

Continuing Education Credits

Upon completion of the conference, attendees will receive a continuing education certificate worth 12.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) in their online Alltricity Network profile. PDHs may be applied toward recertification credit. Typically, 1.0 PDH is equal to .1 CEU, but that conversion scale should always be confirmed with the certifying body attendees are affiliated with.

6. Capstone Case: Three Alternatives 
 
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain:
  • A working knowledge of two key financial statements (income statement and balance sheet)
  • An “appreciation of depreciation” and its implications in the electric utility industry
  • A current view of the types of electric generation and storage in use
  • An understanding of the interaction between energy market economics and generation in ERCOT
  • Insight into the difference between accrual accounting and cash decision-making
  • An understanding of the core business difference between generation and T&D (fixed vs. variable costs)
  • The skill to diagram cash flows of decisions, including the effect of taxes
  • Awareness of the tax differences in decisions for IOUs vs. MOUs
  • The skill to handle uncertainty in financial decisions (using decision trees)
  • The ability to balance decisions between financial and intangible considerations

 
Workshop Instructor
Richard Peña
Principal Consultant, C.M. Lantana Consulting; Senior Consultant, Llewellyn Consulting; & former Senior Vice President - Energy Supply & Market Operations, CPS Energy

 

Richard has over 40 years of experience in the Electric Utility field. His experience includes investor-owned Public Service Company of Colorado, and municipally owned CPS Energy in San Antonio. His areas of responsibility included Power Generation Maintenance, Engineering, Operations, Training and Development, new  Plant Construction, Environmental, Fuels, Market Operations, and Nuclear Oversight.

After his retirement at CPS Energy as Senior Vice President, he started his own company C.M. Lantana Consulting, performing feasibility studies on new Engineering projects and Foreman Leadership courses. He also teaches the Introduction to the Electric Utility Workshop, and is a Certified Professional Coach. He is a Lifetime Member of Alltricity Network.

His undergraduate degree is in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at El Paso, and his Master’s degree in Business Administration from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio Texas. He serves on the board of Prospera Housing Community Services. He and his wife Barbara reside in San Antonio, Texas.
