Event Description
Roundtables offer a unique forum for peer-to-peer sharing of
experiences, critical issues and expertise. The roundtable is a
discussion group, open only to Alltricity Network members. Typically, one or two presentations are given, followed by attendee
discussion and sharing. The roundtable is a good opportunity
to share experiences, troubleshoot problems and network with
peers in a smaller, informal setting. Each participant is offered a
chance to pose questions and share information. All attendees
are encouraged to bring issues for discussion and materials for
sharing. There has been strong support from members to meet
regularly to discuss current safety topics, product experience and
safety related issues in the electric utility industry.
Featured Topic: Blood is Thicker Than Water: The Biology of Proper Hydration
Presented by: Nathan Denney, Licensed Paramedic/Registered Nurse, Capitol Medical Service, LLC
Understanding the importance of proper hydration and electrolyte balance is crucial for maintaining peak bodily functions. In environments with high heat, such as Central Texas, inadequate hydration can severely impact our health. Proper hydration supports essential systems like temperature regulation and organ function. When hydration is insufficient, the body struggles to cool itself, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
This presentation will discuss strategies to keep hydrated while in the field and basic first-aid that can be self-performed in cases of hyperthermia and dehydration. By prioritizing hydration and understanding basic first-aid responses, we can better safeguard our health in challenging environments like those encountered in the utility industry.
About the presenter: Nathan Denney is a licensed paramedic in 911 service for Marble Falls EMS and Williamson County EMS for 23 years in the field, retiring in 2023, with Critical Care certification for 16 years of that service. He became a registered nurse in 2011 working in the Ascension Seton network as a second job, which specializes in critical care and cardiac post-operative care. Nathan has served as an adjunct professor for EMS education at Austin Community College since 2009, becoming lead instructor for the EMT-Basic program at ACC’s Eastview campus in 2021. He has also served in event medical response with an emphasis on first responder education with Capitol Medical Service in 2023, expanding scope of care into occupational health.
